Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

A historian claims to have identified a bridge behind Mona Lisa

The building, depicted in the background of Leonardo da Vinci’s famous painting “Mona Lisa”, is now a dilapidated Romito Bridge near the town of Laterina, Italian historian Silvano Vincheti believes. On this subject informed edition of the Guardian.

Using historical documents, drone footage, and comparing painting and photographs from the area, Vincheti claims that behind the Mona Lisa is the Etruscan-Roman Bridge of Romito.

In the early 16th century, when the painting was made, it was a busy and busy bridge, Vincheti says. Thrown by the ancient Romans on the Arno river, it considerably reduced the distance between the Tuscan cities of Arezzo and Florence.

Now only one arch of the bridge remains, but once there were four. Vincheti measured the width of the river and, using the dimensions of the surviving arch, determined that a four-span bridge would ideally connect the two banks of the Arno in this section of it.

“Arno’s distinctive form in this place is fully consistent with what Leonardo painted in the landscape to the left of the girl,” explains the historian.

According to him, the other two “candidates” for the role of the bridge depicted on the canvas do not meet these criteria. The Buriano bridge, often highlighted as the background of the photo, has six arches, and the Bobbio bridge has even more than six.

Vincheti also found documents showing that Leonardo, at the time of writing the Mona Lisa, was living nearby in the town of Fiesole with an uncle who was a priest. The great painter of the time was in this field in the service of Cardinal Cesare Borgia, then Piero Soderini, a Florentine statesman.

Laterina Mayor Simone Neri said Vinceti’s theory caused a stir in the town of just over 3,500 people.

“We have to try to salvage what’s left of the bridge, which will require funding,” she said.

Mona Lisa or “La Joconde” is a painting by Leonardo da Vinci, one of the most famous works in the history of world painting. According to some reports, the painting was painted between 1503 and 1505 (the exact date is unknown). According to the traditional version, the painting depicts Lisa Gherardini, the wife of the Florentine silk merchant Francesco del Giocondo.
