Police said the 65-year-old, identified by Australian media as Kevin Darmody, went on a fishing trip to northern Queensland (northeast) on Saturday with local residents.
Witnesses then heard the man “screaming and crying very loudly and then a huge rush of water followed”, according to Cairns Police Inspector Mark Henderson.
Rangers armed with rifles then killed two crocodiles several meters long in Lakefield National Park, where the group was hunting.
The police inspector called what happened a “tragedy”, saying that the analyzes carried out on the crocodiles “unfortunately made it possible to identify the remains of the missing man”.
Henderson said the victim was a “very nice guy” who ran a bar in a rural upstate village.
The region’s wildlife manager, Michael Joyce, has warned that Queensland is “crocodile country”.
“If you are in the water and especially in Lakefield, which is specifically designated (a site) for the protection of crocodiles, you should expect to see crocodiles in those waters,” he said.
