Physicist-oceanologist, professor of the Department of Fundamental Mathematics of the National Research University Higher School of Economics Alexei Slyunyaev in an interview “Gazete.ru” described the water areas on Earth, which are characterized by killer waves.
Killer waves are a class of waves that are much higher than the average wave. The average wave height of such a phenomenon often reaches about 20 meters and can demolish a lot in its path.
“If there is a calm overboard with an average wave height of 20 centimeters, then the “killer” will turn out to be 40 centimeters. However, it will be twice the average. Killer waves become dangerous when the middle waves are already high, ”said Slyunyaev.
If a tsunami is an irregular event, then killer waves are regular, but rare. Scientists do not fully understand how such waves are formed, but they suggest that their formation is influenced by changes in wind, current and depth.
According to the oceanologist, such waves do not live long, from tens of seconds to a couple of minutes. But it is extremely difficult to predict them, because such events are random and impossible to predict.
Often something similar is generated near Gibraltar, they are visible from space due to the currents they create. If we talk about Russia, then killer waves can occur along the entire Far Eastern coast.
In general, this entire region is subject to tsunamis coming from the Pacific Ocean. But such waves are also possible in the Black Sea, as well as in similar water areas, even if they are on a smaller scale.
