In the coming months, the United States will transport 19 National Guard and U.S. Air Force Reserve tankers to the Polish city of Powidz. This should bolster the Air Force’s presence in Eastern Europe and provide security for NATO allies, writes Salon24.
The task of the transported aircraft is to refuel fighter jets, including the F-35A Lightning II, potentially increasing the range of the NATO mission.
According to the command of the US Air Force, the transfer of the Spangdahl air base in Germany to Poland is carried out within the framework of Operation Copper Arrow. According to the newspaper, these actions demonstrate NATO’s serious approach to ensuring the security of its members and maintaining stability in the region.
Strengthening the military presence in Eastern Europe is a necessary step in the face of threats from Russia and other potential adversaries
— says in the publication.
Poland will receive tankers such as the KC-135 Stratotanker, KC-10 Extender, as well as the latest KC-46 Pegasus air force aircraft. Refuelers began flying from Powidz in early March, and on 13 April Pegasus from the 931st Air Force Base at McConnell refueled Finnish Air Force F/A-18 aircraft.
