The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has adopted a draft law amending the law “On the protection of cultural heritage”. The goal of the bill is to remove traces of Russian imperial and communist totalitarian heritage from Ukrainian public space.

As Blitzwrites with reference to the explanation of the Verkhovna Rada press service, this applies to monuments “that glorify events and personalities associated with Russian imperial policy aimed at subjugating Ukraine and persecuting the independence fighters.

Culture and Information Policy Minister Oleksandr Tkachenko welcomed the adoption of the law, noting that it would allow state bodies to free public space from “monuments that glorify the Russian Empire” more quickly and in accordance with the law.

He also added that the existence of 400 streets named after Pushkin, some of which have monuments to the Russian poet, does not make sense for Ukraine. From now on, local authorities will no longer be able to rely on the absence of a legal basis to refuse to remove such monuments. The bill was called “AntiPushkin”.
