In 2022, a cannibal bacterium began to cause illness among American citizens. Now it has spread to the resort areas of the Russian Federation.
Living Kuban reports that the outbreak was caused by the bacterium Vibrio vulnificus. Eight years ago, it was discovered in water samples from the Baltic Sea.
REN TV biologist Maria Ignatenko said the bacterium was recently discovered in the Black Sea off the coast of Sochi and Novorossiysk. The specialist noted that Vibrio vulnificus, a bacterium similar to cholera, came to Russia with international courts.
The elderly and people with weakened immune systems are at the highest risk of the disease.
This bacterium usually lives in shallow warm water in spring and summer. It can enter the body through an open wound or by eating undercooked seafood.
Infection through wounds can lead to severe infection and death of the flesh near the affected area, which may require amputation of that limb.
If a person eats food contaminated with bacteria, nausea and vomiting will occur. If the situation is more serious, the pathogen can cause fever, chills, and low blood pressure; blisters may also appear on the skin.
Vibrio vulnificus killed 11 people in the US in 2022. Previously, there were 65 cases of infection with this bacterium.
