Kigali. Heavy rains and floods have killed at least 109 people in Rwanda’s western and northern provinces over the past two days.
This information was given by local officials. At least 95 people were killed in floods caused by heavy rains in the province between Tuesday and Wednesday, Francois Habitgeko, the governor of the western province, told national broadcaster Rwanda Television on Wednesday morning. Densil, the governor of the northern province Nyararugero also confirmed on television that at least 14 people had died from heavy rain that same day.
Mr Habitgeko said that we extend our deepest sympathies to the families of the deceased during this difficult time. “We are working closely with local authorities and emergency services to provide relief and assistance to those affected by this disaster,” he said. The latest weather forecast by the Rwanda Meteorological Agency indicated that expected rainfall in many parts of the country was below normal. But it will be slightly more than the rainfall recorded in May.
According to a recent report by the ministry in charge of emergency management, more than 60 people were killed by disasters in the country between January 01 and April 20.
