Brussels sees Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s plan as the only peace plan for Ukraine, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell told a conference of experts on the state of the EU in Florence. In his opinion, under current conditions it is impossible to speak of a peaceful settlement.
The European Union does not take China’s corresponding plan seriously, Borrell said. The official called Beijing’s proposed settlement option “a set of good wishes.”
“China’s peace plan is wishful thinking, not a peace plan,” Borrell said.
At the same time, the European official admitted that Russia will not accept Zelenskyy’s demands for a peaceful settlement. Borrell recalled that Russia continues to achieve its military objectives. He concludes that the West should “support Ukraine’s military efforts”.
Zelenskyy presented his “peace plan” in November 2022. It provides for the return to Ukraine of territories within the 1991 borders and the payment of “reparations”.
China’s 12-point peace plan for Ukraine was released in February 2023. According to Russian President Vladimir Putin, many provisions of the PRC peace plan can serve as the basis for a settlement if the West and Kiev are ready.
