France will spend two billion euros to encourage the use of bicycles

The aim will be to double the network of cycle paths, to double its size, and the government will spend 250 million euros a year on new cycle paths from 2023 to 2027, and the rest of the budget will be directed towards other measures to encourage the use of bicycles.

“State efforts in the field of bicycles are enormous and unprecedented,” wrote Clement Bonn, the Minister of Transport, in a tweet.

Bonne told Le Parisien newspaper that the government wanted to make cycling an attractive alternative to the car, a mode of transport accessible to everyone from an early age and throughout life.

Bonn added that the aim would be to increase the country’s network of cycle paths, from 50,000 km currently, to 80,000 in 2027 and 100,000 by 2030, with cities outside the capital and rural areas being priorities, because the big cities have already received enormous funding for infrastructure, for bicycles.

These projects are part of Europe’s plans to reduce dependence on vehicles, reduce carbon emissions, as EU countries, amid their efforts to increase the spread of car sales , have reached agreement on a law that effectively bans the sale of new petrol and diesel-powered cars from 2035, in a bid to speed up the transition to electricity and climate change.
