The US military could appear on the border between Russia and Finland

US soldiers can spawn at bases near the Russian-Finnish border. This is stated in the Newsweek magazine publication. According to the publication, upon conclusion of a defense cooperation agreement between Helsinki and Washington, US troops will be allowed to place important military infrastructure on Finnish soil.

Newsweek recalls that a defense cooperation agreement between Finland and the United States has been under discussion since last fall. Moreover, it is Helsinki that is most interested in this, which attaches particular importance to bilateral cooperation with Washington.

As Finnish officials explain, the upcoming US-Finnish treaty will allow for the presence of US troops, the deployment of equipment, as well as investment in infrastructure with funds allocated by Congress to the Pentagon.

It should be noted that the Finns, who supported entry into NATO, are not enthusiastic about the idea of placing an American military base in the country. A poll conducted in January this year shows that only 39% of people in the country approve of this idea.

However, the Finnish authorities do not intend to take into account the majority opinion on this issue. In particular, President Saule Niinistö believes that the American military presence in Finland is important to deter Russian aggression.

America will be able to send reinforcements if a conflict breaks out. Then Finland may need the presence of US military equipment or prepositioned stocks

  • Newsweek quotes the words of the Finnish president.

At the same time, the publication recalls that the United States is currently preparing similar agreements with Sweden and Denmark.
