Britain’s King Charles will be crowned tomorrow in a ceremony at Westminster Abbey in London, and the ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. Icelandic time. In addition, his wife Kamilla will be crowned queen.
The coronation ceremony has its roots in the year 1066. Tomorrow’s ceremony will take place in part the same way as the last coronation of Britain’s head of state in 1953. In other respects, some changes will be made. It is therefore not excluded to describe, in general terms, how the ceremony will take place.
It begins, at 5 a.m. Icelandic time, with a parade of nearly 200 soldiers from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey. The parade will be smaller than a similar parade in 1953.
Karl and Kamilla will travel this route in a magnificent horse-drawn carriage and leave nearly an hour before the start of the ceremony.
The crowning will be adorned with various artifacts and symbols. The main artifacts that will be used are the head of state globe which represents Christianity, a scepter with a cross which represents royal power and justice and a scepter with a small dove statue which represents the spiritual role of the head of the state. .
Unlike in the past, female priests and representatives of religions other than Christianity will play a role in the ceremony.
As before, the ceremony begins with a verbal declaration that Charles is the undisputed king, and the guests will then shout in unison, “God save the king.”
Karl will then take his place in the coronation chair.
He will then take two oaths. The previous oath will be amended as the Archbishop of Canterbury will specifically declare that the Anglican Episcopal Church will foster an environment where people of all faiths can live freely.
Charles will then take the coronation oath under the direction of the bishop. There he will promise, among other things, to uphold the laws of the Church.
Then he will take another oath where he will declare that he is a Protestant, but by law the head of state of Great Britain cannot belong to the Catholic Church.
Then finally it is time for the anointing itself. The Archbishop will anoint a small amount of holy oil on Charles’ forehead, chest, and hands. The oil was specially produced for the ceremony from olives from the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem and blessed in a special ceremony.
This part of the ceremony is designed to highlight Charles’ religious role as supreme head of the English Episcopal Church. The anointing is considered so holy that Karl and the bishop are covered with a curtain during it.
After the anointing, as in coronation ceremonies since the 17th century, Charles will be crowned with the crown of Saint Jávard. At the same time, Karli will receive the previously mentioned orb and scepter. This part of the ceremony will be celebrated across the UK with cannon fire.
Finally, Karl will ascend the throne of the head of state and then various members of the royal family, for example Vilhjálmur the heir to the throne, will kneel before the king and swear allegiance to him.
Unlike in the past, general guests of the ceremony will be asked to declare their loyalty to the head of state, and all members of the public will be asked to do the same. This plan proved controversial Britain .
When Karl’s coronation is complete, Kamilla will be crowned and crowned, but in a much shorter and simpler ceremony. The couple will finally, in Christian tradition, walk down the aisle and then back to Buckingham Palace.
