China ready to enhance cooperation with Pakistan on Afghanistan issue: Gang

Beijing. Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang has said that China is ready to strengthen coordination with Pakistan on the issue of Afghanistan and facilitate the process of restoring peace in the country.

Mr. Gang will be on an official visit to Pakistan till May 6 to hold talks with Pakistani President Arif Alvi, Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhuso Zardari and Afghan counterparts as well as participate in the China-Afghanistan-Pakistan Foreign Ministers’ Dialogue.

“China is ready to strengthen cooperation with Pakistan on the Afghanistan issue, facilitate the process of peaceful reconstruction in Afghanistan, as well as stability and progress in the region,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry quoted Mr. Gang as saying. ”The Chinese foreign minister also said that the Sino-Pakistani cooperation was aimed at global development and security aspects.

The strategic dialogue of the Foreign Ministers of China-Pakistan was held in July 2021 in the Chinese city of Chengdu. An interim Afghan government led by the Taliban (under UN sanctions for terrorism) came to power in 2021 following the withdrawal of US troops from the country and the fall of the US-backed government. The Taliban’s rise to power has raised fears in Central Asian countries regarding the spread of extremist fundamentalist Islamic ideas, as happened in 1996 when the Taliban first came to power in Afghanistan for five years.

The country has since faced a worsening economic situation and food shortages, exacerbated by sanctions and a US freeze on national assets, bringing Afghanistan to the brink of a humanitarian crisis.
