TashkentAsian and Commonwealth Games bronze medalist Mohd Hussamuddin (57kg) continued his fine run of form as he advanced to the pre-quarterfinals of the IBA Men’s World Boxing Championships 2023 in Uzbekistan’s capital Tashkent on Friday. Hussamuddin faces Liu Ping of China in the last-16 bout. The Indian southpaw gained momentum in the first round with a flurry of punches, then maintained it with better strategy to win.

After winning the first round in a one-sided fashion, Hussamuddin took the lead in the next round and landed a flurry of punches while dodging Lew’s punches. The Chinese boxer could not match Hussamuddin’s speed and intensity and eventually lost the bout in a very one-sided fashion, 0-5. Hussamuddin will face Russia’s Savin Edward in the pre-quarterfinal clash on Sunday.

Asian Games silver medalist Ashish was in the ring against two-time Olympic champion Arlen Lopez of Cuba in their round of 16 bout. Ashish went on the offensive in the first round but Arlen defended well and took the first round after landing some heavy counter attacks on Ashish. The Indian boxer came back strongly in the second round and won the round with a flurry of punches as well as excellent defense against Lopez.

Everything was at stake for both the boxers in the final round. Both the boxers fought hard and threw punches against each other. Both the boxers were playing with a lot of heart and courage but the Cuban boxer won the bout 5-2 after the bout review.

Tonight, Naveen (92kg) will face Jeong Jae-min of South Korea. Two Indian boxers will clash in the last-32 bout on Saturday. Akash (67kg) will face China’s Fu Mingke while Nishant Dev (71kg) will face Korea’s Lee Sangmin. 538 boxers from 107 countries are participating in this global tournament.
