First Lady Jill Biden has arrived in London, where she will represent the United States at the coronation on Saturday of King Charles III, eldest son of the late Queen Elizabeth II.
Arriving in the British capital on the eve of a big event, Jill Biden engaged in “soft diplomacy”. Her first stop was the world famous address of 10 Downing Street, where she first met Akshata Murthy, wife of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
Later, in Downing Street, Jill Biden and Akshata Murthy met with military veterans and their families attending a medical rehabilitation program.
The couple then arrived at the cafeteria at Charles Dickens Elementary School, where they met students who donned gold paper crowns as they took part in coronation-related activities. The first lady wished the children “a good time tomorrow”.
President Joe Biden’s wife also visited the US Embassy, where she greeted her staff, after which she ended her day at a reception hosted by King Charles at Buckingham Palace.
On Saturday, Jill Biden will represent the United States at the coronation at Westminster Abbey among hundreds of heads of state, royals from other countries and other invited guests to watch Charles and his wife Camilla to be crowned king and queen.
After that, Jill Biden will attend a reception hosted by US Ambassador Jane Hartley. On Sunday, the distinguished guest will attend a dinner hosted by Sunak and Murthy at their Downing Street residence before flying to Washington.
Joe Biden received some criticism for missing the coronation, but the White House recalled that, according to tradition, US presidents do not come to the coronation of British monarchs.
Before boarding her flight on Thursday, the first lady tweeted that she was “honored to represent the United States at this historic time and to celebrate the special relationship between our countries.”
