These clashes are a continuation of what happened in the town of Bahri on the other bank facing Khartoum of the Nile, where the roar of warplanes was heard during the night and the sound of explosions terrified the population.

“We don’t leave the house because we are afraid of stray bullets,” one of the residents, Ahmed, told Reuters.

On Saturday, a witness in eastern Khartoum spoke of armed clashes and airstrikes on residential areas. In the evening, Sky News Arabia correspondent reported further clashes on Airport Street.

A Saudi-American initiative

Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister said representatives of the military and Rapid Support Forces were in the city of Jeddah for talks on Saturday as part of talks after international mediation pushing for an end to a conflict that has ravaged the country for weeks. .

The Saudi-American move in Jeddah is the first serious attempt to end the fighting since April 15, which has turned parts of Khartoum into war zones and endangered the country’s fragile political transition after years of unrest and of uprisings.

Saudi Arabia and the United States welcomed the start of “initial talks” between the Sudanese military and the Rapid Support Forces, and urged both sides to seriously engage in these talks after violating several peace agreements. cease fire.

But both sides confirmed they would only discuss a humanitarian truce and not negotiate an end to the war.

Confirmation of both parties

• Commander of the Rapid Support Forces, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, better known as Hemedti, confirmed the presence of his gays, saying he hoped the talks would achieve their desired goal of opening safe passage for civilians .

• The Sudanese Armed Forces said it sent a delegation to Jeddah on Friday evening.

• Army special envoy Daffallah Al-Hajj said the army would not hold direct talks with any delegation sent by the “rebel” Rapid Support Forces.

• However, there is evidence on the ground that both sides are still reluctant to reach a compromise that will stop the bloodshed.
