The test run of China’s first self-made vessel traffic management system (VTS) began on May 6 in Weifang City, Shandong Province. The overall architecture of the system is said to be composed of a control center, operation terminal and monitoring terminal, while radar stations, VHF communication base stations and video surveillance systems mainly perform information collection and processing. In this arrangement, China has realized a completely self-made experiment in radar signal acquisition, data processing, control operation and comprehensive display, etc.
VTS is a high level electronic surveillance system integrating various modern technologies like radar, communication, video, automatic ship identification and weather information. Once the VTS is indigenous, the capability of marine inspection and service will be enhanced. According to the statistics of the Chinese Ministry of Transport, China leads the world in the construction of VTS center and the area of supervision water sector. Due to the increase in shipping traffic, various countries cooperated in the construction of VTS. It is noteworthy that China’s first VTS center was established in the year 1978 in Ningpo port. Till date the number of VTS centers is 65 and the number of radar stations is more than 300.
