Artificial intelligence could eliminate 80% of jobs in the coming years

The Brazilian-born researcher caused a stir this week at the Web Summit with his presentation of the robotic nurse Grace, designed to care for the elderly in their nursing homes.

Gurtzl is credited with what is called “artificial general intelligence”, a key technology with human cognitive abilities that can be developed “within a few years”.

He is also at the origin of SingularityNet, a platform dedicated to the decentralized and open development of AI.

In an interview with Agence France-Presse, Guerzel said of what artificial intelligence lacks to have human cognitive abilities, that “if we really want machines with the same intelligence as humans, and able to react quickly to the unexpected, then these machines should be able to do a lot more.” what it was programmed for.

“We’re not there yet. But there’s reason to believe it could happen, not decades, but just years,” he added.

Regarding the controversy around the “GBT Chat”, and whether to freeze research in artificial intelligence for a period of six months, as some claim, he said: “I don’t think we need a six-month shutdown months, because this artificial intelligence is not dangerous, and it has no capacity.” On the complex multi-step thinking, on what scientists do, or on inventing new things from the data that she receives.

He explained: “He cannot make plans to deal with new situations, like the Covid-19 pandemic, for example.”

He pointed out that there are those who call for research to be stopped because this type of system contributes to misinformation, but “Does that mean banning the Internet? I think we should live in a free society, and just as the internet shouldn’t be banned, neither should this chat be banned in GBT,” he said.

And on whether innovators should view AI solutions as a threat to replacing jobs, Guertzl said: “I think time will exceed 80% of the jobs that humans do under new systems like “GBT cat that should be introduced, but I don’t see any danger in that. , but OK. This is a good thing. People will find better things to do, almost all administrative tasks can be automated. »

He added: “The problem will be in the transition phase, when artificial intelligence will start to make time overtake jobs successively. I don’t know how we are going to solve the resulting social problems.”

Regarding the services that artificial intelligence systems could provide in the future, the researcher said: “It can do a lot of good things, like the robotic nurse Grace. In the United States, many elderly people feel lonely in nursing homes, as they receive food and medical care and allow them to watch television is not enough to provide them with what they need socially and emotionally, but adopting humanoid robots in these centers to answer their questions, listen to their stories and help them contact their children or shop online helps to improve their lives.”

He explained: “In this case, there is no job cut, because there are not enough candidates to work in the field of nursing. Education can also be an important area for humanoid robots, as well as housework.”
