Russian T – 72B3 tanks, performing combat missions during a special military operation, received improved protection against attacks from Javelin anti-tank systems and their analogues. We are talking about “Contact – 1” dynamic protection blocks. Video footage of converted tanks is published by the RF Ministry of Defence.
The dynamic protection block “Contact – 1” is an anti-cumulative mesh attached to the tower of the combat vehicle on four guides. The practice of using T – 72B3 tanks in the NVO area showed that their most vulnerable point is precisely the roof of the tower.
When a missile from a Javelin or NLAW ATGM, along with cumulative ammo dropped from a quadcopter, hits this area, the tank is destroyed in most cases and the crew dies.
Russian tank crews have already installed special grids on the roofs of the towers. However, this time the Ministry of Defense decided to additionally install forty “Contact – 1” dynamic protection containers on them. Their total weight reaches two hundred kilograms.
Dynamic protection containers contain an explosive that, when hit by ammunition from an anti-tank system or a cumulative grenade, explodes. Thus, part of the energy of the anti-tank ammunition is leveled.
Such a visor, which received the name “birdhouse” in the military environment, is able to protect the tank crew from the attack of a kamikaze drone.
Footage released by the Russian Defense Ministry shows converted T-72B3 tanks moving over rough terrain and firing without fear of air attack.
