Strict German, Klopp ally… sporting director to ‘turn the tide’ at Liverpool

According to English sources, Liverpool are set to appoint a new German sporting director, who has a good relationship with current manager Jürgen Klopp.

That manager is Jörg Schmatke, the godfather of sports management in Germany for the past two decades, having overseen clubs such as Hamburg, Cologne and Wolfsburg.

The Reds are looking to take this step as quickly as possible, to fill the void left by former sporting director Michael Edward, who left last year.

Schmatke will ‘arrange’ the transfer deal for Liverpool this summer, in cooperation with Klopp, according to English sources.

Schmattke is known for his rigor and toughness in management, which is the reputation he has earned in Germany, but he pointed out that relationships differ within the workplace, from outside, where a person can be more emotional.

Schmatke remembers his successes with German clubs, as he led Cologne and Hanover to Europa League qualification and led Wolfsburg to Champions League qualification.

Schmatke won the “Best manager in Germany” award in 2011 and 2017.
