Sudan. Tripartite mechanism welcomes Saudi-US initiative

The tripartite mechanism (comprising the African Union, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development and the United Nations) has said it hopes that the technical talks between representatives of the Sudanese armed forces and the rapid support forces in Jeddah will lead to agreements leading to a comprehensive ceasefire. , making it possible to provide emergency humanitarian aid to civilians in need, their protection remaining a paramount issue.

The Tripartite Mechanism renewed its call on both parties to immediately cease hostilities, restore calm and protect Sudan and its people from further violence and bloodshed.

He called on both sides to protect civilians and refrain from attacking health facilities and other civilian infrastructure, considering that any further escalation in violence could be devastating for the country and the region.

The Saudi American Initiative

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud said on Saturday that representatives of the army and the Rapid Support Forces were in the city of Jeddah for talks, after international mediation.

The Saudi-American move in Jeddah is the first serious attempt to end the fighting since April 15, which has turned parts of Khartoum into war zones and endangered the country’s fragile political transition after years of unrest and of uprisings.

Saudi Arabia and the United States had welcomed the start of “initial talks” between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, and urged both sides to seriously engage in these talks after violating several ceasefire agreements -fire.

But both sides confirmed they would only discuss a humanitarian truce and not negotiate an end to the war.
