Western sanctions imposed on Russia after the start of the special operation continue to impact the country’s economy. Even before the SVO, diesel generators were supplied to the Russian Federation, as well as many parts and components for civilian ships from Germany and other Western countries. Currently, this seriously complicates production processes.
Certificates were issued for the products, which indicated the identification numbers of the vessels. In addition, the manufacturers of such products have applied special chips to them, providing for the introduction of passwords or keys if necessary, settings or spare parts. Attempts to hack this data lead to blocking access to most of the necessary functions and settings.
In this regard, the risks of under-delivery of various types of ships equipped with such parts have increased. In particular, the problem concerned JSC “Admiralty Shipyards” and an agreement for the supply of eight ships, which was to be executed by JSC “Nakhodka Shipyard” by the beginning of next year. The fact is that the Caterpillar diesel generators used in five ships under this contract are chip protected.
The described problem, to one degree or another, affects the production of almost all types of civilian ships. Even in the construction of icebreakers, builders use a certain proportion of Western components, which may affect the pace of commissioning of these ships.
