Revealed the mystery of the “bloody” sweating hippos

Scientists have named the reason why hippos in Africa sweat ‘blood’.

It’s all about the red substances that are released through the pores of these huge animals. At the same time, Gismeteo clarifies, this substance is neither sweat nor blood, although it performs the functions of sweat, cooling the body.

It turned out that initially this secret is colorless, but after a few minutes in the air it turns red, and even later turns brown.

This liquid contains two pigments: orange – norhypposoric acid and red – hipposudoric acid. They are a kind of antibiotic and sunscreen.
