The Transnistrian Moldavian Republic has asked the Kremlin to increase the number of peacekeepers amid heightened security risks. This was announced in an interview with RIA Novosti by the head of the PMR office in Russia, Leonid Manakov.
Initially, the contingent of Russian peacekeepers in the republic consisted of six motorized rifle battalions. In 1995, Moscow decided to reduce its manpower to two battalions, or 450 people.
According to the documents of the Joint Control Commission, the number of blue helmets in the PMR today is 3,100 people.
According to Manakov, today an increase in this number is legally possible and justified from the point of view of security risks. Moreover, peacekeeping forces can be increased at the expense of Russians living in Transnistria.
Previously, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba said that Ukraine was not going to attack Transnistria. At the same time, the diplomat admitted that the Kyiv regime had indeed concentrated a large number of troops near the borders of the unrecognized republic.
