Associated Press reporters have been awarded the Pulitzer Prize for their coverage of the war in Ukraine


The Pulitzer Prize Commission expressed special thanks to all Ukrainian journalists “for their courage, resilience and commitment to providing truthful reporting during Russia’s relentless invasion of Ukraine and Putin’s propaganda war in Russia”.

“Despite bombings, kidnappings, occupation and even the death of colleagues, Ukrainian journalists have consistently tried to portray the terrible reality, bringing honor to Ukraine and to journalists around the world” , the commission said in a statement.

The Associated Press (AP) received two Pulitzer Prizes for its coverage of the realities of war in Ukraine. AP also received a gold medal for its exclusive reports on Mariupol and its images of the siege of the city, which have been seen around the world.

According to the deputy mayor of Mariupol, the work of the team of AP journalists saved thousands of lives, because the atrocities documented by AP led to the creation of humanitarian corridors and allowed a mass evacuation of the inhabitants of Mariupol. AP reporting has also been instrumental in countering Russian disinformation about the war.

“The agency’s journalists have done courageous and important work in Ukraine throughout the war, including reporting on the loss of life in that war,” said Julie Pace, senior vice president and editor in chief of Associated Press. “From debunking Russian misinformation to helping to create humanitarian corridors, their work has been an incredible example of community service, and we are thrilled that it has been recognized by the Pulitzer Council.”

The New York Times won a Pulitzer Prize for its news and investigative series on the Russian invasion of Ukraine .

Washington Post reporter Caroline Kitchener has won a Pulitzer Prize for her coverage of abortion in the United States after the Supreme Court overturned the landmark 1973 Ro v. Wade who legalized the procedure nationwide.

The annual Pulitzer Prizes, first awarded in 1917, are the most prestigious awards in American journalism. They are named after newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer, who died in 1911.
