During closing arguments in a civil trial in Manhattan federal court, attorney Roberta Kaplan reminded jurors of a 2005 “Access Hollywood” tape they watched during the trial in which Trump brags, with the microphone lit, for grabbing women by their private parts: When you’re a star, they let you be.”
“He thinks stars like him can get away with it. He thinks he can get away with it here,” Kaplan said.
Trump waived his right to testify at trial, opting not to present a defense, betting the jury would find that Carroll failed to present a compelling case.
His lawyers were due to present their closing arguments later Monday.
Trump has yet to attend the trial, which began April 25, but told reporters in Ireland last Thursday that he “may” attend.
U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan, who is not associated with Carroll’s attorney, said he expects jurors to begin deliberations on Tuesday.
Carroll, 79, filed her lawsuit last year against Trump, 76, alleging he raped her in the dressing room of Manhattan’s Bergdorf Goodman department store in 1995 or 1996 and then defamed her when he denied that it had happened.
The former Elle magazine columnist is seeking unspecified damages.
