The Mediterranean.. the heat wave | Sky News Arabia

According to the researchers’ calculations, the probability of the heat wave that occurred in Spain, Portugal, Morocco and Algeria last month has increased at least a hundred times due to global warming.

The heat wave was expected only once in 40,000 years, because before the climate crisis, such an extreme event was only expected to occur once every 40,000 years at least, with a spring temperature 3 degrees higher and half Celsius to what it was.

Scientists from Imperial College London have said that the Mediterranean is one of the most vulnerable regions to climate change in Europe, and these heat waves are unlikely to go away, so these phenomena will occur frequently until governments stop causing greenhouse gas emissions.

Heat like this earlier in the year was bad for farmers who were already suffering from prolonged drought, the scientists said, and the heatwave coincided with an important time in the growing season, especially for the wheat, which was the hardest hit.

The scientists also pointed out that heat waves also tend to be the most severe and deadly type of weather for humans.

The Red Cross and Red Crescent Climate Center has warned that the results of this study, supervised by Spanish, Portuguese, British and Moroccan researchers, confirm the need to work urgently to put in place measures to reduce deaths and also to find emergency solutions to save the agricultural sector in this vital region of the world.
