President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Tuesday, May 9, met in Kyiv with the head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen. He posted the video of the encounter on his Telegram channel.
“From now on, May 9 will be Europe Day – in the European Union, as well as in Ukraine. Today we gather in Kiev on this special day, because Kiev is the perfect place to celebrate the Europe Day Every day, the brave people of Ukraine stand up for the very values that are the foundation of the European Union,” said Zelenskyy.
Earlier it was reported that Ursula von der Leyen arrived in Kiev on May 9. She welcomed Zelenskyy’s decision to cancel Victory Day and make it Europe Day.
Since 2023, May 9 in Ukraine has been declared Europe Day, not Victory Day. The corresponding decree was signed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Thus, May 8 will be celebrated as the “Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism during the Second World War of 1939-1945”.
