The most vulnerable children
Children suffer the most from strabismus. Visual aberration in one or both eyes leads to stress, fatigue and even headaches. Children may tend to move their head in a tilted position to get clearer vision. According to doctors, the problem of strabismus has different types, and it has various solutions and treatments that start with wearing glasses only or surgical procedures. Although strabismus can affect children in particular, there are types of strabismus that affect adults, and they occur suddenly or as a result of certain accidents.
What are the causes of strabismus?
Strabismus is one of the visual defects that unbalance the eyes. Despite the multiplicity of causes of strabismus, 40% of this problem can be linked to specific neurological diseases, or to certain chronic diseases.
Can strabismus be an obstacle in a person’s life?
A question that doctors answer, pointing out that it is an uncomfortable problem for those affected, as it can strain the eye muscles, which reduces the power of sight and weakens vision. Therefore, prompt intervention to treat this problem guarantees a significant improvement in the quality of life of patients.
What is the appropriate treatment?
Osama Abdel Hakim, a consultant ophthalmologist at Magrabi Eye Hospital in Dubai, spoke to “Sky News Arabia” about the problem, saying:
Treatment should begin as soon as signs of strabismus appear. We are facing a problem with many families who do not understand the problem of strabismus correctly, because many of them think that the operation is a cosmetic procedure, but in reality it affects the health and the psyche of the child. The vision system depends on the integrity of both eyes, and so once a person suspects that their child has strabismus, they should seek prompt medical attention. Signs of strabismus can appear in a child at the age of 4 or 5 months. Strabismus treatment operations are among the easiest operations and their success rate varies from 80 to 100. It is not dangerous and there are no secondary complications.
