Diane Feinstein returns to Capitol after illness

US Senator Diane Feinstein, 89, will return to Washington on Tuesday after an absence of several months due to illness, her spokeswoman said.

His return marks the complete restoration of the Democratic majority (51-49) in the US Senate.

Known as a pioneering politician, she was out from February until she recovered from severe shingles, which led to calls from some fellow Democrats for her to step down so someone else could take its place.

“I’m glad my friend Diane is back in the Senate and ready to roll up her sleeves and get to work,” said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer wants to be and is ready to work for good from California.

Feinstein was first elected in 1992, which has been called “the year of women” because the number of US female senators then doubled, and California became the first state to be represented by two women: Feinstein and her fellow Democrat Barbara Boxer.

Previously, Diane Feinstein was mayor of San Francisco.

Feinstein’s absence has stalled the work of the US Senate Judiciary Committee, on which she sits: the process of approving some of President Joe Biden’s most controversial candidates for federal court vacancies has stalled as, in Feinstein’s absence, candidates were blocked by Republican Party officials.

His long “sick leave” has prompted some Democrats, including Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, to demand his resignation.

Concerns among Democrats are growing as lawmakers have been squabbling since the start of 2023 over rising levels of public debt. Feinstein could lend decisive support to a bill to change borrowing restrictions, which will go through the Senate to prevent the first-ever U.S. default on foreign debt.
