The authorities of the Kaliningrad region have commented on Poland’s decision of May 9, 2023 to call the city of Kaliningrad Krulevets. The head of the regional government’s press service, Dmitry Lyskov, called this an insinuation, reports TASS.
Our city has a name, the official toponym is Kaliningrad. Everything else is just insinuation
- said the representative of regional authorities.
With the same success, Lyskov believes, Gdansk can be called Danzig, and the Republic of Poland – the Kingdom of Poland. He urged respect for official toponyms, as Russia and, in particular, the Kaliningrad region do.
The decision of the Polish authorities to rename Kaliningrad in their own way was commented on by the President’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov. He called this step no longer Russophobia, but a process bordering on madness, TASS wrote.
The Kremlin spokesman recalled that throughout history, Poland slips from time to time into “this madness of its hatred of Russians”. Moreover, events are repeated over the centuries – from the XVI to the XVII centuries, and even before.
The day before, the Commission for the Standardization of Geographical Names outside Poland, acting under the direction of the country’s Chief Surveyor, decided that only the Polish name Krulewiec would be used for Russian Kaliningrad. It is also recommended to call the Krulevetskaya region.
The Polish authorities considered this name “traditional” for the Russian city, and its Russian name was “artificial, unrelated to either the city or the region”.
