As the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, explained, Russia has lifted the ban on direct flights to Georgia and canceled the recommendation to Russians dated June 21, 2019 to refrain from traveling in Georgia. At the same time, the Foreign Ministry advises during a visit to Georgia “to take security aspects into account, exercising discretion”.
The decision was taken within the framework of the decree of the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin of May 10, 2023.
Earlier it was reported that this document also affects the visa regime with Georgia.
“Citizens of Georgia will be able to enter the territory of the Russian Federation in a visa-free regime for up to 90 days for diplomatic, service, private, business, tourist, humanitarian purposes, as well as for short-term education,” Zakharova said.
The Foreign Ministry stressed that Vladimir Putin’s decision to resume air traffic and introduce a visa-free regime for short stays of Georgian citizens in Russia is Russia’s principled position aimed at continuously facilitating conditions of communication and contact between the citizens of the two countries, “regardless of the absence of diplomatic relations.”
Earlier, Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze said Georgia did not join Western countries’ anti-Russian economic sanctions because refusing to cooperate with Russia amounts to hara-kiri.
