London confirms delivery of long-range missiles to Ukraine

On Thursday, the UK said it had started supplying Ukraine with Storm Shadow missiles, long-range cruise missiles that would allow Ukrainian forces to target Russian troops and resupply depots stationed behind the lines .

“We will not sit idly by when Russia kills civilians,” British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace said in a speech to parliament. “Russia must recognize that only its actions led to the fact that such systems were supplied to Ukraine.”

According to Wallace, the Storm Shadow missiles “are currently on their way or are already in Ukraine.

Ukraine’s military has urged its Western allies to provide long-range missiles in recent months, but the allies have refrained from providing such missiles.

The Minister explained that the United Kingdom supplies Ukraine with weapons that it can use on its sovereign territory. Recall that, as the international community has pointed out, Crimea is the territory of Ukraine.

The Kremlin has previously said that if the UK were to supply Ukraine with long-range missiles, it would lead to an “adequate response”.

Storm Shadow is a difficult to track Anglo-French long-range air-launched cruise missile. It is capable of carrying a 450 kilogram conventional warhead over a range of up to 300 km.

Development of the rocket began in 1994. It is currently produced by MBDA Corporation, one of Europe’s leading designers and manufacturers of missile systems.

Storm Shadow is a shoot-and-forget missile, programmed before launch. Once launched, the missile cannot be controlled or commanded to self-destruct, and target information cannot be changed. The missile is programmed based on air defense and target data. It is semi-autonomous, on a low trajectory, guided by GPS and terrain mapping, follows the target area. Near the target, the rocket gains altitude, then enters the dive phase.
