The Kremlin and Wagner… a conflict that raises questions about the relationship between them

After the leader of the Wagner group, the influential Russian businessman Yevgeny Prigozhin, set a specific date for Bakhmut’s withdrawal, if his group did not have the ammunition it needed, the man returned to confirm that he had received a promise to get his gun. After that, he said his ammunition was no more than 10% of what was needed, but he said no more about withdrawing.

In contrast, the Russian Ministry of Defense claims that all ammunition requests for offensive units are met as soon as possible, denying Wagner’s accusations.

The statements come at a time when Ukrainian forces say they are in control of Bakhmut’s war and their defenses are successfully coping with Russian fire.

The battle of Bakhmut, the longest and fiercest of the Ukrainian war, raised big questions about the relationship between Wagner and the Kremlin, is it a competition? Or integration? Or maybe reverse roles?

In their responses, Russian analysts told Sky News Arabia that the dispute between the two sides is actually a manifestation of an old dispute between Russian defense and the Federal Security Service, which is believed to be closely linked to Wagner.

They add that the Russian Ministry of Defense seeks to wear down and exhaust Wagner, pointing out: “There is no arena that serves him in this enterprise, more than the disobedient Bakhmut…and for this reason, Moscow closed the door to recruiting Russians. prisoners.”

Amid the ambiguity of the relationship between the two camps, other analysts have discerned, in their statements to ‘Sky News Arabia’, unbridled political ambition in the Wagner leader, which appears in his acerbic criticism of Russian elites , the Kremlin and its leader. , and his promotion of himself as the most powerful and appropriate man to protect Russia’s interests.

In the name of this ambition, according to this reading, “Putin’s cook”, as he is called, stepped out of the circle of shadows into the big day last fall, trying to achieve heroism in Russia’s struggle against Ukraine.

An eye on an economic empire

However, other analysts have answered our questions in this regard, that the eye of Wagner and his leader is precisely trained on an economic empire whose coffers abound with projects on more than one continent, in particular in Africa.
