US general says China’s military modernization ‘threatening’

The head of the US Northern Command, General Glen Vanherke, said China was modernizing its military “at an alarming rate” and developing new weapons. The weapon will be capable of hitting long-range targets, the general said during a speech before the US Senate Armed Services Committee.

Beijing is continuing its ambitious military modernization of its armed forces at an alarming rate. It would be naïve to think that their sprint to develop advanced cyberspace tools and hypersonic technologies is only aimed at regional application.

The general added that China continues to develop “the strategic weapons and infrastructure needed to project military might over ever greater distances.”

Earlier, European Commission Vice-President, Greek politician Margaritis Schinas, told a forum in Madrid that China had become not only a strategic rival of the EU, but also a potential enemy of Europe.
