An important decision of the World Health Organization regarding monkeypox

In July 2022, the organization declared monkeypox a public health emergency of international concern and confirmed its position in November and February.

And World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced the end of the state of emergency for the disease, based on the recommendation of the organization’s emergency committee, which s met yesterday Wednesday.

“While the monkeypox and COVID-19 emergencies are over, the risk of further waves of both remains. Both viruses continue to spread and claim lives,” Tedros said.

The decision indicates that the seizure caused by the disease, which is transmitted through direct contact with bodily fluids and causes flu-like symptoms as well as rashes, is under control.

Nicola Lu, vice-chairman of the WHO monkeypox emergency committee, said there was a need to shift to a strategy to manage the long-term public health risks of monkeypox rather than relying on emergency measures.

Lu said the shift meant integrating monkeypox management and preparedness into national disease surveillance programs, such as those for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.

Monkeypox in numbers

The director of the World Health Organization said the number of reported cases of monkeypox infection in the past three months was about 90% lower than the number in the previous three months.

  • The latest report from the World Health Organization showed that more than 87,000 cases of monkeypox were confirmed worldwide between the start of 2022 and May 8 this year.
  • The international organization said it was particularly concerned about African countries that had been dealing with monkeypox long before the global outbreak of the disease began and may continue to deal with it for some time.
