The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, has announced the willingness of the European Union to cooperate with China to resolve the conflict in Ukraine, reports the Financial Times, referring to a letter addressed to the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Member States of the EU.
The material says Borrell in a letter expressed the EU’s willingness to “seriously engage with Beijing on the conflict in Ukraine, despite its support from Moscow.”
Borrell also noted that he welcomes the positive steps taken by China to find a solution.
EU countries should not seek to “block the growing power of developing countries”, he said, alluding to member countries’ reluctance to accept a tougher US approach to China. Borrell stressed that Brussels should take China’s influence into account when dealing with low-income countries, warning against the expectation that these countries “take sides with one side or another.”
“The EU must be aware that many countries see China’s geopolitical influence as a counterweight to the West and therefore to Europe. They will seek to increase their own leeway without choosing sides,” he added.
Previously, former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger said that China’s involvement in the process of resolving the Russian-Ukrainian conflict could lead to the opening of “real negotiations” on Ukraine.
