Nature: A capsule has been developed that allows physicians to examine the upper intestinal tract.

Researchers at Stanford University and the University of California have developed a capsule that, once swallowed, collects data on digestion and microbiota.

Many analyzes of the gut microbiota focus on samples obtained after the colon. This can result in a lack of metabolites in the small intestine, which means the full picture may not be revealed by these assays.

The CapScan is a tiny device that collects and analyzes biological samples throughout the entire digestive tract. The pH-sensitive coating of the capsule allows technicians to select from a range of sample areas.

For the capsule testing experiment, fifteen healthy individuals were measured for various bacterial, viral, and host proteins.

The researchers found that the values of various metabolites were significantly higher in the lower intestines than in the upper ones. In addition, 2,000 new compounds have been identified that play an important role in nutrition.

Two participants who had taken antibiotics within the past six months experienced significant changes in the levels of two metabolites that reduce inflammation and risk of developing diabetes. Lenta.ru .
