Paramedics were called to a beach near Elliston, South Australia shortly after 10am on Saturday to help a man after reports of a shark attack.
South Australian Police are leading the search for the man, with the help of members of the local community, while the South Australian State Emergency Services dispatched a sea rescue boat from Port Lincoln.
“A man is believed to have died in a shark attack at Walkers Rocks Beach,” police said in a statement, adding the 46-year-old was the only person believed to have been attacked.
A state emergency services spokesman said a team was searching the area using a boat.
The accident happened near a coral reef, which is a popular destination for surfers and divers in the area.
Elliston, with a population of around 1,000, is known for its rugged coastline and nearby surf breaks.
The attack comes after the death of a girl who was attacked by a shark in February in a river in Perth, the capital of Western Australia’s state.
