Russian Foreign Ministry Ambassador at Large Nikolai Korchunov said NATO was looking to strengthen its presence in the Arctic. The alliance wants to advance its own interests by increasing the scale of its military exercises there. Non-Arctic member nations also actively participate in these exercises.
“We see no signs of improvement in the military security situation in the Arctic. NATO continues to expand in this region, on the scale of the alliance’s military exercises taking place there, in which its non-Arctic member countries are actively involved,” Korchunov said in an interview with TASS.
The ambassador added that in some strategic documents of the Arctic countries, Russia acts as an aggressor. An escalation of the conflict is possible in this region.
Last year, St. Petersburg hosted the International Forum “Arctic: Present and Future”. The participants of the event discussed the development of the region in the new geopolitical conditions.
