Study: A relationship between sleep apnea and long-term Covid

The study, which included data from patients infected with the Corona virus, indicated that the “post-Covid-19” syndrome could continue in people with chronic diseases, such as diabetes and obesity.

And anyone who suffers from sleep disturbances, especially sudden sleep apnea, may be at increased risk of prolonged post-Covid 19 syndrome, which can exacerbate the symptoms of respiratory problems that usually accompany Covid, SARS and colds. severe.

This is the conclusion of an American study from NYU Lagoon Hospital University in New York and the National Health Initiative of the United States, and indicated the significant difference between the response of patients to prolonged Corona symptoms.

And the study found that older people who suffer from sleep apnea have a higher incidence of post-Corona syndrome by more than 70%, compared to people who do not suffer from any problems while sleeping.

Sleep apnea is a serious and life-threatening health condition, as breathing stops for up to 10 seconds, many times during sleep, due to airway obstruction or loosening of tissues in mouth, increasing the risk of brain damage.

As for the post-Covid 19 syndrome, it is a group of symptoms that includes cough, fatigue and joint pain, and accompanies patients who have been previously exposed to Corona and whose condition has required a stay in the hospital for a while.

In this regard, an epidemiologist and associate researcher at Kings College University, Abdel Karim Akziz, told Sky News Arabia:

“Some people have sleep apnea and don’t realize it.” “There are symptoms that help diagnose this syndrome, including permanent dry mouth, especially in the morning, morning headaches, snoring, and constant drowsiness.” The syndrome prevents a person from achieving deep sleep. “The deep sleep phase is very important, because the immune system is strongest during it, and the fight against infections is better there because the body does not consume a lot of energy, and therefore the energy is directed towards the fight against infections, including Covid -19.” “The syndrome carries an increased risk of developing long-term Covid, as its symptoms can last for up to a year, including fuzzy memory, poor concentration, cough and shortness of breath.”
