The Trinity icon painted by Russian icon painter Andrei Rublev in the 15th century will be returned to the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC). She will be raised to worship in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior for a year, then transferred to the Cathedral of the Trinity.
According to the Press Service of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus’, the decision to return the image was taken by Russian President Vladimir Putin after numerous requests from believers.
Until 1929, the icon was in the Trinity Cathedral of the Sergius Trinity Lavra, and then entered the collection of the State Tretyakov Gallery.
In July last year, the image was taken to the Trinity Cathedral in the Trinity-Sergius Lavra for two days at the personal request of Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus’. She spent two days in the Lavra, when divine services were held there dedicated to the 600th anniversary of the discovery of the relics of St. Sergius of Radonezh.
