Erdogan said in a post on his official Facebook account: “We will emerge victorious from the second round of the presidential elections, which will be held on May 28, by increasing the percentage of votes we obtained on May 14, and we hope to achieve historic success. .”
The Turkish president indicated that the resolution of the presidential elections was postponed to the second round, by a difference of less than half a percent.
Here are the highlights of Erdogan’s message after the announcement of the results of the first round of the Turkish presidential elections:
The May 14 election is one of the most participatory elections in our history. The elections took place in an atmosphere worthy of Turkish democracy and the will of our nation. Whatever the outcome, the winner of the May 14 elections is democracy and the Turkish nation of 85 million people. Turkey showed yesterday that it is one of the most advanced countries in the world in terms of democratic culture. Our nation has once again shown great support for me with over 27 million votes and 49.51% of the vote. I would like to thank all the citizens who went to the polls on May 14, whether inside or outside the country, and who expressed their free will. As a politician who has known no power other than the will of the people throughout his life, I respect this will which has been expressed at the ballot box. We will fulfill our responsibility to our nation by working without stop or rest until May 28th. Our people stood up for their free will despite attempted political engineering in our country by the Qandil Mountains (a reference to the PKK organization), Pennsylvania (a reference to Fethullah Gulen), social media platforms and the covers of foreign magazines.
Erdogan qualified for the presidential elections after winning 49.5% of the vote, which is below the level of 50% needed to win in the first round, while his main rival, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, obtained 45%.
Kilicdaroglu’s chances of winning the election could depend on the support of Sinan Ogan, the nationalist candidate, who finished third with 5.2% of the vote.
But Ogan said he would back Kilicdaroglu in the second round only if he agreed not to make concessions to the pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party (HDP), which backed him even though he is not a member. of the opposition alliance.
