A course, the first of its kind, was presented to media professionals, organized by the National Center for Monitoring Environmental Compliance, where it was presented by the international expert (George Kotsolios), in which he explained how the media deals with environmental disasters in points, and reviewed many disasters for marine oil tankers. The course began with a study of the case of the Safer tanker Which is a ticking time bomb unless quick action is taken to prevent an oil spill.
He also reviewed the case of the oil spill of the ship (Prestige) and the case of the oil spill of the ship (Wakashio), which was split in two off the coast of Mauritius, resulting in the leakage of tons of oil. In such environmental disasters, the cleaning process is very costly, and it may take many years for the fish stocks to recover, and this negative impact on the environment will be devastating to water and coral reefs, and will cause great damage to homes located near the coast, and an oil spill may cause disruption of vital shipping, which costs billions of dollars daily.
Covering all these events and information is the responsibility of the media in terms of familiarity with all aspects of defining the problem, searching for its causes, analyzing it and covering it from the practical and humanitarian side. It calls for an investigation, as the framing of the event must be positive and comprehensive, in which the journalist investigates the correct and accurate transmission, as the media person is the mediator between the source of the news and the receiver.
On the other hand, the course dealt with several points to prepare the successful journalist and media person in the method of preparing for the event and sufficient and accurate research before going to any occasion or coverage, stressing the importance of the preparation containing numbers, statistics and facts that enhance his position and highlight his knowledge, and he also talked about the importance of drafting the news in a balanced way, not heated, He touched on the role of the media interviewer and its importance in how to prepare questions for conducting interviews. The interview is not an opportunity for the other party to say what serves his position, but rather to obtain real answers that satisfy the curiosity of the viewer.
In this course, I met Saudi experts who participated in official missions such as cleaning up the damages of the Ocasio tanker in Mauritius and proved their competence in crisis management. I was surprised by the competencies we have and I felt that the media did not shed light on their work, skills and contingency plans that they work on in record times, and the quality of the tools and machines used. As we got acquainted closely with their method of work and their arduous tasks, as the process of extracting oil and cleaning the environment is a complex process, what exactly is the role played by the National Center for Environmental Compliance? This is what you will know in another article.
