“The OAS for 70 years has approved all military interventions and coups in Latin America and the Caribbean – in Chile, Brazil, Honduras, Paraguay, Bolivia. That’s why we left this organization and will never go back to it,” Maduro said, speaking on Television’s Venezolana.
According to Maduro, “the OAS has a terrible history and today is nothing, a ruin that must go.” The Venezuelan president underlined his agreement with his Mexican counterpart Lopez Obrador, convinced that “the OAS is no longer useful”.
The Organization of American States was born in 1948, and throughout its existence, the OAS has in fact been a platform for realizing the regional interests of the United States and imposing them on other member states. In 2017, Venezuela announced that it was leaving the organization. According to the OAS charter, two years later, Caracas’ membership in the organization ended.
