Russians have to put up with personal data leaks

Leaks of personal data from Russians have become much more important: for last per year, information about all the citizens of the country is on average published twice on the web. Such an assumption in the Russian media program “Chronicles of the New World” was made by the director general of the Internet Research Institute and the director of analyzes of the ANO “Digital Economy” Karen Kazaryan.

According to him, numerous hacker attacks against government agencies and private services have been going on for more than a year. First of all, Russian companies and commercial organizations suffer from it, “the hacking of which can also bring in money”, explains Kazaryan.

“So yes, there are a lot more leaks. Unfortunately, the personal data of almost all Russians over the past year has been leaked, apparently twice,” the expert suggested.

Kazarian explained that companies that don’t handle their information security properly fall victim to script kiddies – hackers who, despite not knowing how to find vulnerabilities themselves, are able to use ready-to-use programs. jobs (specifically, buy on the darknet) that scan the network for such vulnerabilities and fix them.

“All of this was splashed, including on the Russian segment,” Kazaryan added. According to him, even according to the data of the Central Bank, which publishes them quarterly, the number of frauds has become more important and has increased significantly in 2022. However, the expert believes that citizens “should accept this”, because a significant portion of personal data of Russian residents “already exists on the web, possibly on the darknet, and nothing can be done about it.”

Therefore, now, according to Kazaryan, the focus should be, first of all, on finding intruders, and secondly, on combating popular methods of fraud, be it phone fraud with number theft , fake SIM cards, etc.

“That is, to prevent attackers from using personal data to cause real financial harm to citizens,” Kazaryan pointed out.

In January 2023, DLBI, a Russian service specializing in dark web monitoring and personal data leak investigations, reported that in 2022, due to data leaks, personal information on three quarters of Russian citizens were publicly available on the Internet. As the company reminded, last year personal information of Russian citizens was published on the web due to leaks in large companies such as Russian Post, Yandex.Food and Delivery Club, SDEK, Gemotest , Tutu.ru, Kwork and others.
