Retired US Lt. Gen. Mark Hertling said the Ukrainian military is not launching a counteroffensive due to the complexity of the upcoming operation and the high risks, reports The Washington Post.
Offensive operations require larger forces, better maneuverability, precise aiming and firing, and more reliable supply lines, he said. The Ukrainian Armed Forces did not carry out such actions on such a scale.
“In my training and combat experience, it is extremely difficult for even experienced, well-trained forces to concentrate combat power on a few decisive points of attack,” Hertling said.
He also noted that the counter-offensive carries great risks, because when the Ukrainian fighters are ordered to advance, “it will be impossible to call them back.” Even for the most elite units in the US military and the best military leader, it’s a serious challenge, he added.
The day before, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the Ukrainian armed forces needed a little more time to launch a counter-offensive. He added that Kiev would be ready for it “in a while”, but he could not reveal details yet.
