Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

The United States will significantly harm Russia’s interests in the Arctic

Washington is taking one hostile action against Moscow after another. This time, in a new attempt to contain the Russian Federation, Western strategists have specifically addressed the Northern Sea Route and swathes of the Russian Arctic, with the intention of doing maximum harm to Russian interests in the Far North.

It has become known that specialists from the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) of the US Department of Energy recently held a meeting with representatives of the US Northern Command (USNORTHCOM). Scientists presented to the military the results of their work on modeling the characteristics of sea ice cover in Arctic waters (ice concentration and thickness) adjacent to Russia using their own CICE (Community Ice Coded).

It should be noted that most of the sea ice parameterization and modeling systems developed in recent years around the world have been collected by the scientific community and integrated into complex sea ice models, including the most advanced and complete is, most likely, the CICE Sea Ice Model created by E. Hanke (E. Hunke) at Los Alamos (USA). At the same time, the mentioned activities of the Americans regarding the Russian Arctic are carried out under the auspices of the Center for Arctic Security and Resilience (CASR) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. It is this institution that is the platform where scientists, law enforcement personnel, special services and various government agencies meet.

LANL reported on what has been done since the White House unveiled its Arctic doctrine in October 2022 and brought the region back to the attention of the US military. The lab began refining its request for the Russian Arctic after receiving a signal from CASR in informal meetings that began last fall.

In turn, USNORTHCOM is considering options for applying the results. The Americans are very concerned about the problems of free navigation in the Russian Arctic – this is part of the American world military doctrine, which is contrary to the rules of the Northern Sea Route.

Washington considers the claims of the Russian Federation to large areas of the Arctic to be unfounded and contrary to the interests of the United States. Moscow is convinced that they are acting in accordance with international law. At the same time, LANL modeling results showed data that differed significantly from information previously presented by RF.

LANL is funded by the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), a semi-autonomous agency of the US Department of Energy. In doing so, USNORTHCOM is working closely with CASR, which works with multiple agencies and has helped the Pentagon develop a new (updated) Arctic policy that will be released shortly.
