In preparation for the Arab summit.. Arab foreign ministers meet in Jeddah

At the start of the meeting, Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Ataf said:

The world is witnessing transformations that require an Arab position to keep pace. We welcome Syria’s return to the ranks of the Arab League. We call for redoubled Arab efforts to establish a Palestinian state. We are seeking for Palestine to gain full membership in the United Nations. The developments in Sudan are very worrying. The return of stability in Libya will only go through an internal route through the organization of elections.

For his part, the Saudi Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, revealed after assuming the presidency of the Council:

We thank Algeria for its efforts during its presidency of the previous summit. I welcome the participation of the Syrian delegation in the Arab ministerial meeting. We stress the need for an Arab position to face the challenges facing the world. Our Arab region is full of human energies and natural resources that challenge us with ourselves. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia renews its aspiration to work with all of you to strengthen the stability of our countries, mobilize efforts and move forward on the path of development and prosperity.

In the aftermath, Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit said:

The global environment is always fraught with dangers and crises. The struggle of the great powers imposes additional costs on the shoulders of many countries, whether it is a question of strengthening security or obtaining resources, in particular energy and food. We hope that Syria’s return to the Arab system will be a prelude to emerging from its crisis. The crisis in Sudan carries risks for the stability of the country. The Arabs will not leave the Sudanese alone. The situation in Palestine is approaching the explosion stage.
