The ex-president of France will serve it at home.
Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy was sentenced to three years in prison in the so-called wiretapping case. In addition, two years were conditionally appointed, and the politician will be forced to spend another year at home with a bracelet on his leg.
“Sarkozy has been found guilty of ‘corruption and influence peddling’ in an unprecedented verdict against a French president,” Agence France-Presse reported.
Besides Sarkozy, his lawyer Thierry Erzog and former judge Gilbert Aziber received similar sentences. All were also accused in the case.
During the mandate, the former president of France will lose part of his civic rights. In particular, he will be prohibited from being elected to public office, as well as from practicing law.
According to investigators, in 2014, through his lawyer, Sarkozy promised an employee of the Court of Cassation a post in Monaco in exchange for information on the electoral fraud case.
This is Nicolas Sarkozy’s second term. In 2021, a Paris court sentenced the former French president to one year in prison. He was convicted of illegally funding his campaign in 2012.
