The number of unemployed, as determined by the International Labor Office, was 2.2 million, meaning it barely declined in the first quarter (less than 7,000).
The National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies had initially reported an unemployment rate of 7.2% in the fourth quarter of 2022, then revised it slightly downwards (0.1 point lower).
French Labor Minister Olivier Dussopp welcomed the figures via Twitter, saying they reflected “efforts to achieve the goal of full employment”, i.e. an unemployment rate of almost 5%.
According to the detail, the youth unemployment rate (15-24 years) fell very slightly during this quarter, by 0.2 points to reach 16.6%.
For 25-49 year olds, the unemployment rate remains almost stable (-0.1 point) at 6.4%.
The unemployment rate for people aged 50 or over increased slightly (+0.2 point) to 5.2%, but remained below its level a year earlier (-0.3 point).
